How to choreograph a dance?

How to choreograph a dance? Do you have to make a choreography? Do you have to create a wedding dance choreography? Are you thinking how perform salsa figures for your salsa class? Do you have to perfect a dance choreo for your dance team?… or maybe you just want to do a choreo because you feel like it.

It is even possible that your choreography is almost finished, but there is some part that you are not quite excited about. Salsa Dance Moves can help to show you different moves or maybe the same moves in a different style. Keep in mind that the dancers featured in the video library of movements are masters of the dance, and salsa in particular.

Salsa Dance Moves helps you to make a salsa dance choreography

Salsa Dance Moves helps you to make a dance choreography, a salsa figure,… or some parts of it. And this is thanks to the fact that on the website there is a section specifically prepared to be able to make a salsa dance choreography.

How does it work?

The basis of the system is to join two movements in which the initial position of the dancers in one movement matches the final position of the dancers in the other movement..

Moreover it’s important to note that dancers who star in these dance moves do not have to be the same in each of the movements.

The second important point is that on the website you’ll find many drawings representing the different positions that dance couples usually take.

Let’s see an exemple.

At the beginning of the choreography

At the beginning, drawings are representing an initial position of a move, they are representing the initial position of the salsa dance choreo.

In this case we are going to choose the position shown in the drawing below. As you can see we are not going to start the choreo with a usual position. It is for you to see that it is possible to start with any starting position.

By the way you can see some numbers on the bottom left of the drawing. Those numbers 66/628 indicate that there are 628 movements with the selected dancers, of which 66 begin with this initial position.

It is a drawing that shows a position of a dance couple. It is the initial position of the couple in the choreography

Let’s go to select one of the 66 moves. For exemple we chose a movement of Barbara Hegyi & Sean Babatunde whose final position is the same as the initial one.

Then, in the drawing below we have the position of the dance couple showing the end position of the move. Consequently it would be the starting position of the next move of the choreo.

It is the final position of the dance couple in the first move

Let’s see the movement we have chosen.

If we decide that this movement suits us well for the choreography, Salsa Dance Moves will display us the options to continue with the choreo.

Second move of the choreography

Because we know that the next move has to start like the previous one ended, we know how the next movement will start.

Salsa Dances Moves will display us some drawings with:

  • the final position of the next move
  • the name of the dancers
  • the duration of the movement

Thus it’s time to select one of them to continue with the choreography. For now we have decided on a movement of Beige & Rok

It is the final position of the dance couple in the second move of the choreo

And the move is…

Therefore, if the movement seems really good to us to continue the choreography, Salsa Dance Moves will display us the next moves to continue with the choreography.

Third movement of the choreo

We look at the possibilities and choose one. In this case we select a movement from Anita Santos & Fadi Fusion.

It is the final position of the dance couple in the third move

Can you do this?

Although the choreography is short, we think that if we make the choreography longer the explanation would be a bit redundant. So, we are going to add one more movement to finish this choreography.

Last move of the choreo

As always, Salsa Dance Moves will display us some options to finish the choreography. Our choice to end the choreo has been a movement from Cloe Ferreira & Nery Garcia.

It is the final position of the dance couple in the last move of the choreography

Finally, we just have to save and we will have the final choreography.
